Without A Good Subject, You Have No Article: How To Choose A Good Topic
July 9th, 2009 by Jarlene FisherWant to write an article? What’s the most important part of this article? You guessed it, the subject. This often stumps writers. In choosing your topic you need to think about all of the things about which you have some knowledge. In fact, write them down. Then, choose the one or ones for which you have a great Passion.
When you write about your Passions and write WITH Passion, you will find your writing just flows out of you. This enthusiasm for your topic will be recognized by your reader and they will want to keep reading.
This is important because editors love enthusiasm in articles. Since you are writing about something of which you have knowledge, you will save much time in research. And when you write about your Passions, your writing becomes a joyful time rather than a dreaded task.
If you feel that writing in your interest area is too limiting, then branch out into similar areas. For example, if you have an expertise in chemistry, then writing about health shouldn’t be too much of a learning curve for you. This will also give you a wider scope for selling your articles, as most magazines have a health section. The health articles can then be stretched to include topics on sporting injuries and how to treat them. Or perhaps nutrition, but narrow this down by focusing on various age groups. See how the ripple effect happens? It won’t take long for you to be submitting articles to many different magazines and websites. You’ll be writing about different topics, but you will retain your passion and enthusiasm.
If you choose to be a freelance writer, then choosing your topic is up to you. However, if you are asked to write about a topic that you know little about, then you will need to do some research. A skilled researcher will find information quickly and then bring it all together to create the article.
An option for creating an article on a topic that’s not in your field of knowledge is outsourcing. Several websites specialize in outsourcing. You can outsource the actual writing of the article, or you can outsource just the research. In any case, check the work that is sent to you. You want to make sure that grammar and spelling are correct. But more importantly, you want to be certain that the work is original and has not been plagiarized. Your reputation is on the line here, and you don’t want it ruined.
Publishing articles on the internet can be a little risky, as there is seldom an editor to read your article and say yes or no. So it is up to you to get your facts correct and offer good solid information in your article. An article that has fresh, new information will help you build a good reputation.
So we all know that dogs need water, food, and exercise. Don’t write about these things that “everyone knows.” Instead, give new information. For example, you might write about how the droopy eared dog needs to have his ears checked for ticks and other diseases that might develop. Don’t waste your reader’s time. If you don’t have any new information to offer, they won’t be back. Challenge them with new facts or even new ideas to ponder.
Remember – your topic should be one that fills you with Passion. Use your knowledge and Passion to create an article written with lots of enthusiasm. Challenge your readers. Soon, you will find writing and submitting articles not only easy to do, but a joyful part of your life.
