Who Wants To Become An Author? Thoughts About The Profession From An Experienced Author
July 13th, 2009 by James FarnswellonThinking about what it is like to be a writer is the primary step involved in learning how to become an author. There is a bit more to it than you would think. There are many things to understand first.
Authors are people with great imaginations. Being able to dream something is a prerequisite for writing. Novels, poems and stories are nothing more than dreams captured on paper. Without having the dream firmly in place, the finished product will not come to fruition. There is a first step for everything in life. Visualizing is the first step for an author.
Developing your imagination is extremely important. If you can clearly see in your mind’s eye exactly what the character looks like, it will be much easier to convey that image to the reader. Clarity is a must. How are you going to be able to get the reader to accurately imagine what you are trying to show him without clearly seeing the picture for yourself?
Professional writers usually have a favorite place to work. There is usually one place that is superior to all the rest where your creativity is at its full capability. You need to find this place for yourself. If you’re smart, you’ll do everything you can to preserve or improve that work space. This will have a major influence on your productivity.
To an author, a blank piece of paper is like a painter’s canvas awaiting the paint. You should think of it as such. Every blank page has the potential to become a masterpiece.
This is when the magic begins. Now it is time to turn that blank page into an art form that will capture the reader’s focus and paint a picture for her that is clear and bright.
There were just the two of them standing at the bar. The bartender was near the other end. They looked like the perfect match. Paul commanded a real room presence with his salt and pepper hair and six foot three inch physically fit stature. Susan was an equally attractive female counterpart with her wavy long auburn hair leading down to her lightly tanned shoulders. She was a real vixen in that black cocktail dress.
It really feels good when you know you have captured the reader’s attention. It is somewhat hypnotic. Being able to influence the thoughts of other people is indeed very powerful. This is a very gratifying side of being a professional writer.
