A Guide To Writing

There are few things that sound as great as a song with a talented female vocalist. This applies to nearly all genres of music, and female singers are responsible for some of the most successful songs in music history. The last 15 years have seen even more emerge, and the movement continues to gain steam.

My favorite genre of music is indie rock, and there’s no shortage of female talent here. There are some great artists with a knack for writing songs and singing them, and I’ve been fortunate to enjoy many of them.

This article is going to focus on a few of the biggest female talents in indie rock music today, with their vocals being the deciding factor in who makes the list. While there are dozens I could easily list here, I’m going to limit this article to my favorite four.

First, I’d like to mention Regina Spektor. I’m in a coffee house as I write this, and her music is playing. This in fact inspired me to write this article.

Her voice is believed my many to be one of the best in music today, and some exceptional songs over the last few years have showcased her raw talent.

Chan Marshall’s voice is a little less pure sounding than Spektor’s, but it adds character to her music. The best comparison may be Janis Joplin, though Marshall’s voice (she goes by Cat Power) is a bit smoother.

Another one is Sharon Jones. A Motown singer in her 50’s, she’s paired up with the Dap Kings, a backing band, and the unlikely combo has produced some exceptional music. Jones’ voice is one of the freshest and best in music today, and her retro style is appreciated by many fans.

One last women worthy of making this list is Shara Worden. Look her up on YouTube if you’ve never heard her music and you’ll immediately be sold. Her sweet voice may be the best female voice in indie rock today.
